Riverbend Hospital on lockdown; man in custody

Riverbend Hospital went on lockdown Thursday night according to an emergency alert text message.

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- Police arrested a man Thursday in connection with the lockdown at Riverbend Hospital in Springfield.

Shawn Wusstig, 43, faces charges of methamphetamine possession and disorderly conduct.

Both Riverbend and the University District Hospital were on preventative lockdown Thursday night due to the situation.

Police said they received a call from Riverbend Hospital around 1:40 p.m. reporting that a man, later identified as Wusstig, had entered the hospital at 6:30 a.m. with a gun in a case, telling hospital staff he was looking for a gun class. After he was told there were no gun classes at the hospital, he left.

Around 3 p.m., police were called to the Cloverleaf Loop area, where Wusstig was seen trying to open a car without shoes on. An area resident confronted Wusstig, who told the resident he was trying to find an apartment. Police later located Wusstig, found him in possession of meth, arrested him and took him to the Lane County Jail.

Around 3:30 p.m., a Riverbend employee found a rifle in a gun case in the south parking garage at Riverbend, putting Riverbend and University District hospitals on lockdown.

Police have the gun in their possession and charged Wusstig with disorderly conduct.

Police told KEZI 9 News that once Wusstig is released from Lane County Jail where he was booked for meth possession, he will be transferred to the Springfield Jail for the disorderly conduct charge.

Both Riverbend and University District hospitals will remain in lockdown until 5 a.m. on Friday, when they will allow patients and families with scheduled appointments to enter through the main lobby and Heart and Vascular Institute doors.

Riverbend will reassess the situation during a meeting at 6:30 a.m. and then decide if they can open their doors for regular operations at 8 a.m.

Marcy Marshall, a spokesperson with PeaceHealth said a suspicious individual was at the Riverbend campus and was escorted off the campus.

Riverbend and the University District Hospital were put on precautionary lockdown, meaning that people could only enter through the emergency entrance.

Marshall said no one was injured.
