ROSEBURG, Ore.— Dozens of veterans gathered at the Roseburg VA Wednesday for the 4th annual Homeless Veteran Stand Down.

VA staff say the event was created to help homeless veterans get their basic necessities.

They provided dental screenings and medical shots. They also say more than 25 local organizations came to provide clothing, food, animal care, haircuts, financial, and housing assistance to those who needed it.

"We also want to reach those veterans that we haven't had a chance to, for whatever reason, speak with,” says Kevin Wagner, the social work supervisor at the Roseburg VA. “We want to get new veterans in so we can reach our goal of ending homelessness."

According to an online report, there are 1,300 homeless veterans out of the 13,000 homeless people in Oregon.

VA staff say they hope events like the stand down will help end veteran homelessness in Oregon.
