ROSEBURG, Ore. -- The United Community Action Network Food Bank received more than 30,000 pounds of food from Sherm’s Thunderbird Market Friday.
Sherm’s staff drove the semi-truck full of food from the store’s warehouse in Medford then unloaded at the UCAN Food Bank in Roseburg.

Staff said the truck was filled with all non-perishable food, such as boxed pasta, ramen noodles, canned fruits, and cereal.
“(We like to give) them choices,” said Sarah McGregor, the project manager at UCAN. “It gives people a little more dignity around the food that they are getting.”
Steve Olsrud, who owns Sherm’s, said this is the 14th year they have donated to the food bank.
He said the tradition started in 2006 after they wanted to help those struggling to purchase food. Since then, he said, they have donated more than 360,000 pounds of food.
“We just feel it’s our way of giving back to the community, helping the people who really need the help,” said Olsrud.
McGregor says UCAN will be sorting the food then distributing to all 17 of their partnering food pantries throughout Douglas County.
