Roseburg teen drowns in Umpqua River

A bystander brought the teen to shore, but lifesaving efforts weren't successful.

OAKLAND, Ore. – A Roseburg teen drowned in the Umpqua River over the weekend.

Aliya Grizzard, 15, had been floating the river on an inflatable air mattress with her family when she was swept down through a rapid. She was not wearing a life jacket.

The call for a water rescue came in shortly after 6:30 p.m. on July 4 in the area of the Yellow Creek Boat Ramp along Highway 138W outside Oakland.

Bystanders and family members searched for the girl. A bystander brought her to shore, but lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful.
