WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Oregon Sen. Ron Wyden has announced a plan to prevent wildfires before they start.

It would involve the forest service removing hazardous fuels that can burn in forests around Oregon and the rest of the country.

Wyden spoke on the Senate floor Thursday, saying wildfires have gotten worse every year.

"They're not your grandfather's wildfires," Wyden said. "They are bigger, they are hotter, and they are more powerful. In my home state last summer, we saw a fire leap the Columbia River."

Wyden said the fires are destroying homes and creating unhealthy air. He said something needs to be done to stop them from breaking out.

He said his plan will help improve the health of forests, which he said is a key step to reduce wildfire risk.
