COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. -- At a town hall in Cottage Grove, Democrat Sen. Ron Wyden called the Trump administration's declaration of a national emergency a "horrible precedent," and many at the event cheered and applauded the statement.

"(President Trump) ought to cut his losses and work with us for sensible border security which includes fencing, drones, radar and technology that doesn't include a wall," Wyden said.

Cottage Grove husband and wife Steve and Mary Nicewander both attended the town hall, and both have different opinions about the wall.

"We need to do something, but I don't think it needs to be abrupt and evasive as he's heading," Mary said.

"I think there should be a wall mainly for the protection of the people trying to come across," Steve said. "I'd like to have them come in the right way and get inoculated and get sent to a place where they are safe."
