CRESWELL, Ore. – More than 50 firefighters responded to a large structure fire in Creswell Wednesday evening.
KEZI spoke with South Lane County Fire & Rescue Chief John Wooten who said they received several reports of a large fire around 4:43 p.m. on the 200 block of South Mill St.
Wooten said the building that caught on fire was the site of the old Whistle Stop Barber Shop. He said the building is now an apartment complex which houses a handful of people. Wooten said all residents were accounted for and there were no reported injuries.
KEZI spoke with one woman who lived in the complex. She said she’s grateful everyone got out okay, but said it was devastating seeing her home go up in flames.
“My first thought was to get my pictures of my kids, and then I was just afraid we wouldn’t all get out in time,” said Ginger Collins. “Then we had to stand across the street and watch it… It’s not much to be thankful for, except for our lives.”
Wooten said the fire caused extensive damage and may have started on the second floor on the west side of the building.
Wooten said crews will be monitoring the building throughout Wednesday night to ensure there are no flareups. He said the fire is under investigation and it could take several days before they find an exact cause and an estimation on the damage.
