EUGENE, Ore. -- Several people escaped a house fire in Eugene Friday morning.
The flames broke out shortly before 9 a.m. in the 1800 block of Taney Street. Fire officials said several people were inside the home at the time, but were able to safely evacuate before firefighters arrived. Officials said the fire started in the back of the home. It took 45 minutes before firefighters had the flames under control.
Eric Roberts, who lives nextdoor, raced outside to make sure everybody was okay.
"I just saw a lot of smoke...came outside to make sure everything was okay and noticed a gigantic fire," Roberts said. "By the time I was going to call, the fire trucks already showed up."
Firefighters said the home suffered extensive damage, but were unable to give an estimate of how much it will cost to repair. Firefighters used a chainsaw to cut through the roof and extinguish the flames.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
