DILLARD, Ore. – A Dillard man shot and killed his girlfriend before turning the gun on himself Sunday night, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said.

Linda Free, 63, of Dillard was found dead in the home with a gunshot wound, and Thomas Higginbotham, 88, was found with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound and a weapon in his lap. He was taken to Mercy Medical Center in Roseburg in critical condition and is not expected to survive.

Deputies said at about 5:10 p.m., a man called 911 and reported a woman had been shot in the 100 block of First Street. The caller disconnected. A deputy briefly spoke to the man while on the way and the man reportedly told the deputy to “have a good one” before a gunshot was heard.

When deputies arrived, they heard a final gunshot from inside the home.

Detectives are investigating the incident as a murder-suicide.

The Douglas County Medical Examiner's office also responded and has notified family members.
