EUGENE, Ore. -- School districts from around the Eugene and Springfield area discussed the benefits they’ve seen from bringing Career Technical Education programs to their schools at a recent City Club meeting.

At the meeting, superintendents discussed how well the CTE programs are working, the outcomes they expect from having the programs and what they plan to do to ensure long-term success.

One major area of discussion was how graduation rates have improved.

“It’s about the hook for kids,” said Eugene School District 4J Superintendent Gustavo Balderas. “It’s about student engagement. Really, it’s about engaging every kid. In Eugene, we’re – last year, 89 percent of students graduated if they took two or more pathway programs. The year before that was over 90 – was closer to 92 percent.”

Superintendents said with that student engagement, they want to continue to focus on CTE programs in high school. But as a long-term goal, it’s about getting kids ready to engage.
