SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- Nearly one week ago a 58-year-old Florence resident Patrick Stapp was in a rollover crash and left the scene.
His son, Jon, said he's been missing ever since.
"He hung his hat on the trailer hitch to tell everyone he was okay," Jon said.
Soon afterwards, Stapp disappeared after walking a mile and a half away from the scene of that wreck.
"I don't know if he thought he would be in trouble for the car wreck and not reporting it, or hit his head, or exactly what happened, but he decided to evade the police and jump over the ledge," Jon said.
Police went to that area and saw him at the bottom of that embankment near Lake Sutton Road in Florence.
"The officer did see him down there for a short period of time, trying to duck down," Jon said. "Like I said, I don't know what was running through his mind. But when the officer looked away and re-positioned himself to shine his flashlight, he was gone."
Stapp hasn't been seen since then.
Jon said he's been posting updates to Facebook and people have been willing to give up their time to help him search.
"I've had a lot.. a lot of people searching," Jon said. "Volunteers from Facebook that have been absolutely wonderful. I could not ask for more help. Strangers helping complete strangers gives me complete faith, you know?"
Search and Rescue crews have scoured the area as well.
"The officers have been out there they were out there Tuesday with a full search crew, search dogs, and they didn't surface with anything," Jon said. "They're having a team of divers come out Sunday night -- or, Sunday, to help look for him."
If they can't find him, Jon said they're likely calling off the search.
However, Jon said he won't give up until he figures out what happened to his dad.
"The not knowing is the hardest -- is absolutely the hardest thing," Jon said. "Any information would be great. I would take good news or bad news at this point. It's the not knowing that tears us apart."
As for how Jon's doing with all this?
"'I'm doing okay for now. I just want to hear news," Jon said. "I took it really hard earlier in the week, and I just want to find him."
