CANYONVILLE, Ore. -- The South Douglas County YMCA will be holding its annual Water Safety Day on Saturday, June 2.

Parents and kids are invited out to the YMCA in Canyonville to learn about ways to keep children safe in, on and around water.

With the school year coming to an end, the YMCA wants to get ahead of the summer river and lake trips.

At Saturday’s event, they will be giving out 80 free life jackets and teaching kids why they need them.

“The water comes from glacier water, so on a hot day, it may be really hot outside, but the water is really, really cold," said South Douglas County YMCA Director Christine Turvey. "And it only takes two, three minutes for your body to start shutting down, and then you’re gonna go -- you’re not going to be able to swim to shore if you’re in the river.”

The event will be held in the Canyonville YMCA parking lot, 330 Sabbath Way, Canyonville.
