EUGENE, Ore. -- The Axemen is no longer the name of the athletic teams at South Eugene High School.
Kerry Delf, the 4J School District spokesperson, said the athletic department will be changing the name from Axemen to Axe.
Principal Andy Dey recommended the name change which was approved by Superintendent Gustavo Balderas.
"Our goal has been to ensure all students, student-athletes and teams are united under one name and one symbol moving into the school's future," says Dr. Andy Dey, South Eugene High School principal.
School officials said the axe is a longstanding part of the school's history and tradition. It was the first symbol that students and athletes rallied around and the Axemen name had been used since the 1930s.
"I submitted this recommendation fully aware that it will not satisfy everyone, but with the hope that all members of our community will recognize that it expresses our shared values of tradition, inclusion and unity," he added.
They said changes to clothing and other materials will take time. The school is working on a schedule and a budget plan to make the replacements.
School officials said only the name will change. The colors and the symbol will remain the same.
