COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. -- New buses are going to be rolling into the South Lane School District over the next couple years.

Their communication director, Garrett Bridgens, said they have 38 buses and will have to replace 12 of their regular buses and eight of their special education buses.

He said under the "Diesel Emissions Reduction Act," any bus that is older than 2007 must be replaced or retrofitted by 2025.

Bridgens said buying one new special education bus or one regular bus could range from $75,000 to $135,000.

He said other school districts in Oregon are having trouble complying with the law. He said some districts are hiring independent bus services but South Lane School District does not want to resort to that.

"Our employees that work in our school district are part of our community,” said Bridgens. “Their families all live here and they raise their kids here. So it's really important that our transportation department is something run by the school district.

He said the district is currently working on a budget plan to comply with the law. They plan on utilizing state and federal grants to replace the buses.
