SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- The Springfield Police Department has enhanced their high visibility enforcement throughout the holiday season to better combat DUII.

They are urging the community to celebrate safely and responsibly.

Their website notes some statistics about DUII:

"According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) alcohol-impaired driving fatalities account for nearly one third of all traffic fatalities in the U.S. In 2018 10,511 people died as a result of alcohol-impaired crashes."

Police are reminding the community that if they are impaired by any drug or alcohol, they should not drive.

Police encourage you to plan ahead and celebrate the holidays safely.

If you plan to drink, plan for a sober driver to take you home.

They are also encouraging all hosts to make sure their guests leave with a sober driver.

"In an effort to increase community safety the Springfield Police Department will increase DUII patrols throughout the holiday season, specifically in the months of December and January," they said on their website. "Increases in DUII patrols are possible through grant funding made available by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration."

Springfield Police ask that if you see an impaired driver, call 911 and monitor the car from a safe distance until police arrive.

If You Feel Different, You Drive Different.
