SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- Eugene Springfield Fire responded to a report of an attic fire at the Quality Inn and Suites in Springfield just after 9 p.m. Monday.

Guests were asked to evacuate for less than an hour.

Guest Jacob Nelson said he was woken out of a deep sleep by someone knocking on his door.

"Hear this huge knocking on my door and I'm completely asleep, and they're pulling us out saying, man, everything, like, there's smoke coming down. We don't know where a fire is, but we know there's a fire going on," Nelson said.

Nelson is one of dozens of people who were pulled from their rooms late Monday night.

Battalion Chief Chris Paskett said there was a fire in the attic, but the hotel's sprinkler system quickly took care of the fire.

"I haven't put eyes on all rooms, but I believe there is some water damage all the way down to floor one," Paskett said.

Though guests were inconvenienced, Nelson said he's just glad the situation was handled well and no one was hurt.

"It's better to be safe than to have anybody in danger, but I'm sad that the inconvenience fell on tonight," Nelson said.

People that are staying at the Quality Inn and Suites were let back into their rooms by 9:45 p.m.

While there is some damage to some of the rooms, there is no word right now on if that will affect any of the patrons that will be staying at the Quality Inn.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
