SPRINGFIELD, Ore.-- Sean VanGordon was appointed interim mayor of Springfield on Tuesday night.
VanGordon represented Ward 1 in Springfield. He will serve for the next two years, until a new mayor is elected in November 2022.
Leonard Stoehr, who represents Ward 4, was also in consideration for the position. However, the council voted 4-2 in favor of VanGordon.
VanGordon is active in the Springfield community, serving on the Springfield Economic Development Agency, the Springfield Budget Committe, the HOME Consortium, Lane ACT, the Springfield Legislative Committee, the Springfield Library Board, the Springfield Development Code Update Project Advisory Committee, and the Lane County Poverty & Homeless Board.
Springfield has been without a mayor since August 2020 when former mayor Christine Lundberg resigned unexpectedly. With VanGordon's seat now open, the council will have to appoint someone to serve his old position.
In tonight's meeting, councilors pledged a transparent process that would allow for public input.
