SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – Officers used a Taser in making an arrest in Springfield after responding to reports of a driver harassing and threatening someone who was walking down a street.

Lt. George Crolly with Springfield Police said officers responded to 6th and C streets at about 10 a.m. Tuesday and began looking for the suspect.

Police reportedly found Robert L. McElligott, 33, of Heppner nearby at 8th and B streets and conducted a traffic stop. McElligott reportedly got out of the car and walked toward the officers, threatening them. Crolly said the man refused to identify himself.

When police went to take him into custody, McElligott bit one of the officers, Crolly said. Another was reportedly kicked and struck in the face.

Both of the officers at the scene used Tasers but they had no effect. The man was then handcuffed and identified before being taken to the hospital, which is required after a Taser is used. Crolly said the officers were treated at the hospital for their injuries.

McElligott faces two counts of assaulting a police officer and one count of resisting arrest.

Police said they identified McElligott as a suspect in an incident at a Springfield convenience store on Dec. 11 in which he reportedly harassed and spit on an employee. He was not arrested at the time, but he is facing a harassment charge in that case.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact Springfield Police at 541-726-3714.
