SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – A fire destroyed a house on 37th Street in Springfield Monday morning.

The homeowner, who uses a wheelchair, was inside when the fire broke out and his fiancé woke him up and told him the house was on fire. The man saw flames in the hallway and was able to get to a side door. He was pulled from the home by rescuers.

The man’s fiancé was taken to the hospital for unknown medical issues, possibly related to smoke inhalation. One other person was inside the house when the fire started, but made it out safely.

The house at 342 37th Street was valued at about $250,000 and is a complete loss. The fire started in the garage and the cause is under investigation.

The call came in at about 7:35 a.m., and initial reports indicated that the house was engulfed in flames and that power lines near the house were down.

Two cats were also inside the home when the fire started, and their location is unknown.
