Springfield police seek possible witness to sexual assault

Police said a female employee was sexually assaulted outside a grocery store on Main Street.

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – Police are looking for a woman who may have witnessed a sexual assault that happened outside a Springfield grocery store on Aug. 14.

Police said a female employee was sexually assaulted by a man while she was disinfecting carts outside the Albertsons grocery store at 5755 Main Street. The alleged incident happened at about 6:20 p.m. on Aug. 14.

The man accused of the assault was later identified as Arthur Dale Esgate, 55, of Springfield. He was arrested Tuesday morning and is in Lane County Jail on charges of third-degree sexual abuse and driving while suspended.

Police said that after assaulting the victim Esgate continued into the store. The employee told store management what had happened, and Esgate was escorted from the store. Detectives were able to identify Esgate as the suspect and arrested him Tuesday morning without incident.

Police want to talk to an unknown female shopper who may have witnessed the incident. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Keith Seanor at 541-726-3721.
