SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – As Springfield Public Schools prepares to bring some younger students back to class this week, district leaders are enlisting the help of parents to keep COVID-19 out of the classroom.

District staff have created a checklist meant to be used each morning to screen children for symptoms before they head off to class.

If a student has tested positive, had close contact with a confirmed case, or has a fever or other symptoms, everyone in the household should stay home. If the student has other symptoms like nausea or vomiting, he or she should stay home but a sibling could still go to school.

Tanya Martin, district nurse for Springfield Public Schools, said school staff will also be monitoring children when they come to school to look for any obvious signs of illness.

“Staff are going to be trained on what’s called a visual screening,” Martin said. “It’s a very passive process as the student enters the building or gets on the school bus. Staff are looking for any signs or symptoms the student might not be feeling well.”

Martin is hoping parents work in tandem with the district to make sure that no students who have COVID-19 or another virus make it to the school building.

“Stick one of our checklists on your fridge or by your door on the way out. It’s great to ask those questions as you’re remembering to grab your mask on the way out to school and getting in the habit of checking in with your students every day,” Martin said.

The district has also posted copies of the daily health checklist and when to stay home checklist on their website.
