CHESHIRE, Ore. – Hamlin Middle School sixth graders spent the day at outdoor school in Cheshire Tuesday, demonstrating their understanding of skills learned in the classroom.
The trip was part of the Springfield Public Schools “STEAM” program, which stands for science, technology, engineering, art and math.
"Yesterday we were building shelters and stuff and then Ms. Woolby's class and then for Ms. Butler's we were doing geocaching. And then today for Ms. Woolby's we went hiking a bit and then for Ms. Butler's we're doing the coordinate plane shapes," said student Tristen Scholine.
The students used longitude and latitude skills to rescue school mascot Lenny the Logger. They also engineered a shelter and solved puzzles using geocaching.
Hamlin teacher Jen Butler said the students practiced the skills in the classroom before heading to Camp Lutherwood in Cheshire.
