LANE COUNTY, Ore.- Despite COVID-19 cases starting to decrease, state health officials are predicting another increase in cases and hospitalizations into the fall and winter months.

COVID cases are down 11% statewide from last week, and the surge we are in now seems to be winding down.

Dr. Dean Sidelinger, the Health Officer and State Epidemiologist for the Oregon Public Health Division, said this does not mean the surges are over.

“Whatever form of COVID is in front of us, mixed with influenza, we will see increased cases and increased need for hospitalization into the fall and into the winter,” Sidelinger said.

This comes at a time when hospitalizations are starting to go down. 592 people were hospitalized with COVID from September 6th through the 12th. This is down 1,028 from the week before.

In Lane County, there are 89 people hospitalized with COVID. That’s down from 108 cases on Monday.

Dr. Sidelinger also addressed the new Mu variant that has some people concerned.

As of right now, he said there has been no Mu variant spread in Oregon yet and he said the main concern is still the Delta variant.

It's been dominating the cases with 95% of detection's in the recent weeks due to the Delta variant.

With that said, he said the most important thing people can do right now is get vaccinated.
