EUGENE, Ore.-- Officials are investigating the source of a strange scent that drifted through Eugene Sunday morning.

According to Eugene Springfield Fire, people began calling in about the smell at around 10:30 a.m. Residents who reached out to KEZI 9 News described the smell as a strongly chemical or petroleum-like.

Fire officials said the scent was trapped near the ground due to atmospheric conditions and drifted from northwest Eugene to southwest neighborhoods throughout the day.

The origin of the smell is still under investigation. Officials said they have investigated the train yards among other possible sources, but have not yet identified the cause.

According to fire officials, whenever there is an irritant in the air, it is best to stay inside. Due to the speed with which the scent appears to be moving, however, officials said they are not currently concerned about any acute health risks.
