EUGENE, Ore. -- Teachers at Lane Community College didn't walk out on Wednesday -- but they did rally to show their support for education funding.

Students and teachers picked up free signs and T-shirts and laptops were set up so they could send messages to lawmakers.

Many people at LCC told KEZI 9 News that part-time faculty needs health care, student debt must stop rising and staff and students want more support.

"As much as I like teaching, I also like eating," part-time teacher Andrea Hirons said. "I like being able to feed my children, and I like to be able to take them to the doctor when necessary."

Some LCC students were also supporting the cause on May 8.

"I respect their decision by rallying ... even teachers need to be paid more as well. They love doing what they do and the amount of students they lose due to financial issues is a problem because they love teaching and I love learning," student Baker Kunzad said.

Students and faculty told KEZI 9 News that lawmakers need to be more aware of the crisis that education is in right now in order to keep it accessible and affordable.
