EUGENE, Ore. -- Thousands of schools and libraries across the nation are celebrating Read Across America Day.

The goal is to spread the word that reading is an important factor in a student's achievement.

KEZI 9 News visited O'Hara Catholic School, where second graders were listening to Dr. Seuss books.

"I think it's kinda fun because, well, we just get to read Dr. Seuss books. I love Dr. Seuss books because they are funny and sometimes he makes up words," said Fletcher, student.

Read Across America Day falls on Dr. Suess' birthday so students also made art that featured Dr. Suess.

Research shows children who are motivated to spend more time reading do better in school.
