The "bike rodeo" is meant to help kids develop biking skills.

EUGENE, Ore. -- The rodeo is in town for students at River Road/El Camino del Río Elementary School -- a "bike rodeo," that is.

This is the first year for the bike rodeo, and it's already made it around to all elementary schools in the 4J district that have YMCA or BEST after-school programs.

Officials with 4J's Safe Routes to School program said the goal is to celebrate biking and improve students' biking skills and to get kids excited about different ways to get to school.

Students receive hands-on instruction on stopping, starting, turns, hand signals, riding in a straight line and avoiding obstacles.

Participant Scarlet Craig said she hopes it encourages friends to learn to ride.

"Because I would like to ride with them on the bikes, and I think it's good for lots of people to learn how to ride a bike," Craig said.

This could be the last bike rodeo of the year, but 4J officials said they hope to bring the program back to the schools next year.
