CRESWELL, Ore. -- A Creswell man is in jail after a break-in was interrupted by a neighbor.

According to the Lane County Sheriff’s Office, James Paul Smith, 49, followed a person to their home and refused to leave their porch.

After the residents left, Smith attempted to break into the home before being interrupted by a neighbor. They were engaged in a physical fight when deputies arrived.

Smith refused commands and fought with law enforcement officers as they attempted to take him into custody, deputies said. A Taser was deployed and additional deputies responded.

Smith was transported to the hospital for a medical evaluation before being taken to jail. He was lodged in jail on charges including burglary, resisting arrest, and assault of a public safety officer.

Responding deputies and the neighbor who interrupted the burglary suffered minor injuries.
