Swimmer rescued from Willamette River

Officials say he was overcome by the cold water temperature and swift currents.

EUGENE, Ore. -- A swimmer at Alton Baker Park was rescued on Friday evening after becoming fatigued in the fast, cold water.

Officials responded just after 6 p.m. after a witness dialed 911.

By then the man had made it to a small island in the middle of the river. Rescue crews picked him up with their boat.

"The big thing to remember, especially as we move into spring and we're going to have some really kinda unexpected warm days, is that the river conditions are still not suitable for swimming," Battalion Chief Markus Lay, Eugene Springfield Fire Dept., said. "If you've come down to the river with your children or your family just make sure that you practice a lot of caution. Stay out of the water."

Lay said the rescued man did not require medical attention.
