EUGENE, Ore. -- The Technology Association of Oregon hosted the state's largest tech company open house in Eugene on Thursday.

The event offered students, job seekers, and tech enthusiasts the unique opportunity to tour tech companies in downtown Eugene.

About 50 local companies showed off their work and tried to recruit talent for over 230 open positions.

The greater Eugene area is home to 471 tech companies, and local industry partners say that Eugene is a secret tech hub that should no longer be ignored.

Celeste Peterson, the director of people development at Palo Alto Software, says that Eugene has everything a tech epicenter desires.

"We have a short commute," said Peterson. "We have a strong sense of community, a really connected community, great access to the natural world, a very healthy and beautiful natural environment and also a lot of innovation and exciting things happening in the tech industry here."

Quorum was one of the participating companies, and those who work there say that after Symantec and Veritas left Eugene, a hole formed, leaving tech jobs extremely desired.

Terry Creighton is an engineer there, and he says he was one of the employees that was laid off and suffered the consequences.

"It was hard, it was hard to find a job," said Creighton. "I was one. I was one of those individuals who was laid off from a tech support gig over at Veritas, and it was pretty rough. Finding a job was hard because there were 500 other people I was competing against."

He says encouraging other tech-industry businesses to come to the area would only work as a benefit for us.

Melissa Freeman also works at Quorum, in their sales department, and she says that it's a field that could suit anyone.

"Any sort of person succeeds in tech," she said. "I come from an absolutely not technical background. I have more of the outgoing personality, so I'm built for the sales department. Sales, marketing, customer service; any of that is good for non-technical people and then anybody who's super nerdy can do the developers or the tech support or system admin type of roles."

The event attracted more than 800 people, and organizers say they are already excited for next year's tour.
