EUGENE, Ore.-- The holiday shopping season is well underway, and with it comes the annual crime wave involving package thieves. Some residents in Santa Clara have already been ripped off.
KEZI spoke to neighbors Tuesday, who all said they are aware of the problem. They’ve even seen people looking through mailboxes, then running away.
One resident said when she went to get her mail one day, it was wet, as if someone had shuffled through it and dropped it on the ground.
Another neighbor said some pieces of mail have simply never shown up, and she suspects someone may have taken them.
People are so fed up, they've started their own neighborhood watch program. They told us they are making an extra effort to look out for each other.
“Lots of times mail comes up missing… Most of the neighbors around here will ask us or next door to get their mail. A lot in this area, it has happened." Susan Potts, a local resident, said.
Some people have taken matters into their own hands, putting locks on their mailboxes.
Eugene police told KEZI it's a good idea to have your neighbor check the mail if you can't be there to do it. They also suggest having expensive items delivered to your place of work.
If you see anything suspicious, contact Eugene police.
