HARRISBURG, Ore. -- The small town of Harrisburg was packed with patriots enjoying the Fourth of July holiday.

Events started early with a pancake breakfast followed by the annual Fourth of July parade. The procession went down 3rd Street and by the local high school.

Diana Chappell with the Eugene Springfield Fire Department and her family have been taking part in the parade for the past 25 years. Riding in their vintage Lane County Fire Prevention Co-Op engine, they always put a smile on paradegoers' faces.

“It's fun to see them suddenly feel like they're singled out and it's a fire truck and it's just cool,” Chappell said.

World War II veteran Paul Boeger rode on the South Willamette Valley Honor Flight float. He was 15 years old when Pearl Harbor was attacked and joined the Navy two years later. For him, Independence Day is not only about celebrating the founding of our county but also a time to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

“I thank the lord that I'm here and I think of all those men that aren't here,” Boeger said. “That's what it means to me -- to think of what those guys had to give up for us to have our freedom in this country today.”

After the parade, many enjoyed a classic car show, live music and barbecue chicken at the Harrisburg Fire Station. City leaders planned a fireworks display near the banks of the Willamette River for dusk Wednesday.

“It's good to see family and friends gather and celebrate America,” said Linda Tompkins, who enjoyed the parade.

Many of the events in Harrisburg were free to the public. Those that cost money benefited local causes.
