EUGENE, Ore. -- Volunteers will spend the next year nurturing 2,000 trees in Eugene ahead of the IAAF World Track and Field Championships in 2021.

More than 200,000 people are expected to visit during the championships, which led the city to launch an initiative to plant 2,021 trees to offset the carbon footprint of the event.

The Archangel Ancient Tree Archive donated the giant sequoias to the city. Each tree has been cultivated from cuttings or seeds taken from ancient trees in the high sierras – many that are thousands of years old.

The trees spent the past year growing at the Archangel Ancient Tree Archive Nursery.

Over the next year, Eugene Outdoors volunteers will be caring for the trees at the Alton Baker Native Plant Nursery.

Officials are asking the public to weigh in on where to plant the trees. The Urban Forestry Team is looking for suitable locations for the trees, which will be planted next winter.

A giant sequoia could become part of your home, business or school’s landscape, city officials said.
