EUGENE, Ore. – Local band High Step Society canceled a concert scheduled for Wednesday night after they say members of the anti-vaccination community threatened the venue, Thinking Tree Spirits on Jackson Street in Eugene.
“It's incredibly heartbreaking that a community celebration was derailed because a small group of people decided it was their place to impose their opinions and fault this business for following state guidelines which they are required to follow,” the band wrote on Facebook.
According to the event details, attendees of the concert were expected to show proof of vaccination in order to enter the venue without a mask. There did not appear to be an alternative section for guests who are unvaccinated.
In a Facebook post, Thinking Tree Spirits called the situation “unfortunate” and said their highest priority is the safety of staff and the community.
“This negative response was based on our decision to host a full capacity vaccinated event,” the business said.
In May, the Oregon Health Authority released new guidance allowing businesses to host events where guests are not required to wear masks, but the business must then check for proof of vaccination.
It’s unclear if High Step Society plans to schedule another event in Eugene. The band is scheduled to perform in several cities and states in the coming months.
