SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- A seventh-grade girl at Thurston Middle School faces criminal charges after being accused of giving three other students marijuana-laced candy.

The student was charged with three counts of delivering marijuana within one thousand feet of a school.

The candy was described as a "pineapple-flavored chewable rope similar in appearance and texture to licorice." Officials said the suspect admitted buying the drug from a high school student in a nearby park.

Officials said they heard about the incident Monday after students went to the office feeling nauseous and lightheaded. One student was taken to the hospital.

Lt. Scott McKee of the Springfield Police Department said it appears to be an isolated incident. He said it is a good reminder that students shouldn't share food.

"Schools discourage sharing food anyway, with peanut allergies and such like that," McKee said. "I think the bigger picture is that families have to expand their discussions and think about the fact this is sort of a threat that's out there."

The principal of Thurston Middle School sent out a letter to parents telling them about the incident and reminding students not to share food. The letter also said bringing prohibited substances to school will result in disciplinary and possibly criminal action.
