ROSEBURG, Ore. -- There will be a minor setback in renovations of the Roseburg High School football field.

Crews found areas of soft ground near the inner edge of the track.

Officials said it happened because fabric wasn't used to separate the dirt and rock beds in that area.

Superintendent Gerry Washburn said the improperly layered rock in the middle of the field created a harder surface, forcing the edges to take on more of the drainage demands.

“We’re putting in a brand-new system. And when you put that system in, you want the ground underneath all the way out to the track to be consistent the entire way, so that everything functions the way it’s supposed to function,” Washburn said.

Washburn said this extra work will cost $99,000, which will come from the school's maintenance fund.

It should only affect maintenance work that isn’t immediately necessary to school function.

He said this additional work should only delay progress by a few days.
