Eugene, Ore. --  Competition among 5A football schools is arguably the best in the state. For South Eugene's second go-round in the classification they're bringing a new edge in the form of new head coach kenny koberstein.

"I want to say it wasn't even more than a week," says senior quarterback Bryce Boettcher. "I mean he came in, high energy all the time. and it was, he's easy to be around, good guy, all the staff is good dudes you know. they know what they're talking about, so i mean it didn't take long at all."

"I was trying to get to everything I could when I first got here," new head coach Kenny Koberstein mentions. "A lot of baseball games, trying to you know district track meet, just walking around trying to meet kids and figure out you know put faces to names for the most part."

As challenging as the transition of a new coach may be -- at least Kolberstein inherited a 3 star quarterback

"For Bryce it's going to be about you know distributing the football and controlling the game," says Koberstein. "You know he's a special player, he's going to have a lot of attention each week. but we just need him to be Bryce every week. We don't need him to be anybody else or try to do anything outside of himself."

"I'm just going to keep it simple you know go out and try to win every game," Boettcher mentions. "There's a fine line between thinking too much and wanting to win. I feel like when it comes down to friday nights just giving it your best and wanting to win will overcome overthinking everything. so I'm just going to keep it simple, and just do my game."

Last season the Axe finished one game above 500 and just missed the cut to make the playoffs. This year it's more clear what they need to do get over the hump.

"It's going to take a lot of senior leadership and a lot of you know dedication and showing up and working hard," says running back Orion Garcia. "Hard work you know gets it done and that's what we're all about."

"We just got to compete every day," Koberstein concludes. "You know we talk all the time about you versus yesterday and be one percent better. You know that's really what it's; that's really what it takes. I mean it sounds like coach speak and that's cause it is, but you know it's the truth."

South Eugene's quest to the postseason begins September 6th as they take on the Wilson Trojans.
