Springfield, OR -- Only one team won their final game of the season last year, and it was the Thurston Colts who held up the state championship trophy on Ron Tonkin Field.
"Man it was unreal," said receiver, Kyle Casley. "I mean, can't really even describe it."
A season after the Colts won their first ever state title in basketball, the football team claimed their first championship as well.
"I think it's great to be the first one, but I also hope now we can be the first group to do it twice," said running back, Wesley Kommer. "Honestly it just feels like we're up there you know, it feels good."
To illustrate just how difficult that challenge is, only seven teams in the NFL (The Green Bay Packers, Miami Dolphins, Pittsburgh Steelers, San Francisco 49ers, Dallas Cowboys, Denver Broncos and the New England Patriots have all won Super Bowls in consecutive years.), have accomplished this feat.
Casley said, "We were hunting, this year we talked about we're going to be the hunted. And you know that makes us have to be even more on top of our game at all times. So yea it's going to be tougher this year for sure."
The Colts know with being the defending champions they're going to get each opponents best every time they touch the field.
"With a giant bullseye on your chest, I'm sure you're going to take everyone's best shot," said head coach, Justin Starck. "You're not going to surprise anyone, so I'm sure it's going to be difficult. Umm we're doing everything we can to be prepared."
Even with the added pressure, Thurston is built to contend again with the return of a number of starters for their championship team. Starck said he expect his team to be able to rise to the occasion and welcome all challenges they face.
"I think this group can fight through. I think they do expect to win and they know that they have it in them. And that they're going to find a way when they need to," he said.
Kommers added, "We got a, mentality that's kind of like we're dogs you know. We got to go for it and uhh don't back down."
The Colts started their season with a big 54-0 win over their rivalries, the Churchill Lancers.
