EUGENE, Ore. -- The University of Oregon has a muddy mess on their hands after water from a nearby mill race flooded the construction site of the Phil and Penny Knight Campus for Accelerating Scientific Impact.

Darin Dehle, director of design and construction at the university, said on Aug. 1 crews were digging near the mill race when the bank gave in. The water flooded a vast majority of the site.

Dehle said the site used to be home to a gas station and part of the soil was contaminated. They have been working with the Department of Environmental Quality to make sure none of the water is too polluted.

“There is always something that goes sideways on a job, it just depends on what it is,” Dehle said. “The team was really good on hopping on this and getting control of it very quickly last week.”

Crews are pumping the water out, running it through a series of filters to extract contaminated sediment. They hope to have it fully drained by Aug. 11.
