U.S. Coast Guard investigates Mary B II capsizing

The announcement comes a week after the fishing boat capsized attempting to cross the Yaquina Bay Bar, resulting in the loss of three men.

NEWPORT, Ore. -- The U.S Coast Guard is now launching a formal investigation into the Mary B II capsizing.

On Jan. 9 the Mary B II capsized in Newport trying to cross the Yaquina Bay Bar. 

The three fishermen on board, Joshua Porter, James Lacey and Stephen Biernacki all died.

On Jan. 16 the Coast Guard announced that commander Karen Denny will lead the investigation. Denny has served in the Coast Guard for 18 years and is the the executive officer of Marine Safety Unit Portland. 

Once the investigation is complete, Denny will issue a report with a conclusion on possible safety recommendations.

The hope is that the investigation findings will help prevent future capsizing incidents from happening.
