EUGENE, Ore. -- The University of Oregon is looking to make improvements to Matthew Knight Arena.

The project will be funded through private philanthropy and will consist of two main components.

Upgrading the graphics and visual experience in several areas of the arena is the first component. Officials said the idea is to improve the day-to-day student-athlete experience. They said this includes practice courts, the weight room, the training room and other areas.

The second component will involve building a three-floor office building connected to the practice courts. It will be an office space for coaches and other staff to make them more accessible to student-athletes.

Some University of Oregon are excited about the improvements.

“Student athletes do bring a lot to our community,” Adam Brewer said. “As it’s made UO what it is today. Our campus is based off of football players, Nike, track, our big communities and that’s a part of why we need to help our sports teams as much as we do.”

Other students had mixed feelings about the plans.

“I think that although the athletes do, do well, and deserve to have better facilities,” Bridgette Tmur said. “The money could go towards improving the dorms and they’re a little run down in certain halls.”

Officials said a construction firm owned by Phil Knight will be doing the work. They said it’s too early in the process to tell how much the improvements will cost, but the university hopes to start work this month.
