EUGENE, Ore. -- The owners of the Valley River Center are planning a major renovation that could breathe new life into the region's largest shopping mall.

Officials at Macerich, which owns VRC, announced the project Monday afternoon.

As envisioned, the former Sports Authority building will be demolished and replaced with 14,000 square feet of outward facing stores and restaurants.

Officials say the project will begin this later this week or early next week and will be completed by late fall.

Plans call for a "grand outdoor plaza" which will serve as a new front entrance. The plaza will include outdoor seating and gathering space for special events, officials said.

“Valley River Center is all about providing great experiences for people, and we are creating this appealing new entrance and beautiful outdoor space to bring our shoppers a fresh look and feel,” Rob McOmie, property manager for Valley River Center, said in a statement. “This project also includes new outward-facing space for shops and restaurants, adding energy, connection, and a whole new sense of arrival.”

The cost for the project was not included in the company's announcement.
