Veneta house fire may have been arson, fire officials say

The cause of the fire was initially believed to be a heater malfunction, but now officials consider it to be a suspicious fire.

VENETA, Ore. -- A Monday morning house fire in Veneta is being investigated as a possible arson, fire officials said.

Chief Terry Ney of the Lane Fire Authority said the cause of the fire was initially believed to be a heater malfunction, but officials now consider it to be a suspicious fire.

The investigation has been turned over to the Lane County Sheriff's Office.

Crews arrived to 25503 Jeans Road at around 5:30 a.m. Monday to a small fire at the home, and crews were able to quickly put the flames out. The house was under construction and not occupied.
