SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- Hundreds of students and volunteers came together at Two Rivers-Dos Rios Elementary School Friday to make lunches for the homeless.

The sandwiches were made with the help of The Arc Lane County. The Arc helps people of all abilities be as independent as possible, including those with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Principal Charlie Jett said he’s happy students got to have this experience.

“Citizenship is really a part of what we want students to get away from their education here,” Jett said. “Being able to say, 'I contributed and put something together, I helped pack a sack lunch that I know is going to really provide a healthy meal to somebody else,' that’s important. I feel students are really going to get a real sense of contribution.”

The 500 lunches -- which included sandwiches, fruit, chips, water and other items -- were delivered to the Eugene Mission, Opportunity Village and St. Vincent de Paul.
