SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- A group of volunteers are working hard to preserve the historic Hayden Bridge in Springfield.

Members of Workin’ Bridges installed new planking for pedestrians on the old railroad bridge, which crosses the McKenzie River on Marcola Road.

Volunteers still need $60,000 to buy and install a new railing.

“So that’s why we’re here. We’re here because of that historic bridge,” Julie Bowers with Workin’ Bridges said. “We’re about the only people that are an action-oriented nonprofit that actually do get out there and do the work to save the bridges.”

Two years ago, Weyerhaeuser sold the bridge to the group for $1.

The bridge was originally built in Utah and moved to Springfield around 1901. It was retired from service in 1989.
