EUGENE, Ore. -- With Uber returning to Eugene next week, KEZI 9 News looked into the requirements drivers will need to comply with before they can start taking fares.
Drivers for the rideshare service get a percentage of each fare they take and can get tips. As independent contractors, they have to pay for maintenance and gas.
According to Uber's website, drivers must be at least 21 years old and will need to apply with Uber online where they will submit documents including insurance and registration.
Uber will also do a background check.
Drivers in Eugene will also have to get their vehicles inspected. The inspection costs $18 and will be done at the Les Schwab on West 11th Avenue.
The city of Eugene is also requiring drivers to carry a first-aid kit in their cars, as well as get a business license that needs to be renewed by the city every year. Drivers will need to get the certificate at Eugene’s City's Planning and Development Office. It costs $65 dollars for the first year and costs $45 to renew.
Eugene Mayor Lucy Vinis is expected to take the first Uber ride next Thursday.
