EUGENE, Ore. -- The Whiteaker community and other Eugene residents had a chance to break bread with Eugene police at New Day Bakery.

Police Chief Chris Skinner and multiple police officers showed up to the bakery to meet with members of the community.

Their goal was to have a conversation and listen to any concerns or questions they might have.

"It helps me to remember how integrated we all really are," Officer Shawn Trotter said.

That was exactly what police were hoping for from Tuesday's "Presence Kneaded" meeting: to connect and hear concerns from community members.

"I've noticed there's less of a police presence, and I've noticed a little up-tick in crime," said one Whiteaker resident. "Just generally in visiting with friends here, the neighborhood has gone down a bit."

The man does agree that the beauty of events like this is being able to talk directly to the police chief in a non-formal setting.

"So I asked the chief if he could have more of a presence, maybe even some officers on foot here to get to know us and just be visible in the community in a way that they are not now," he said.

Officers said they also benefit from being able to swing through and chat with anyone that has something to say.

"We want them to see our true hearts, and we want to hear from them about some of their specific concerns -- ways that we can do better and ways that we can improve how we offer those professional police services," Trotter said.

If you missed Tuesday's meeting, Eugene police said they have more events like this coming up in the future.

You can follow their Facebook and Twitter pages to keep an eye out for those events.

However, if you need to submit feedback to the police department soon, you can do so by going to their website.
