EUGENE, Ore. -- A new WinCo Foods may go into a building on Chad Drive that was left vacant when Shopko closed earlier this year, a source tells KEZI 9 News.

Shopko filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in February. The Wisconsin-based grocer later announced it would close 200 stores, including the location at 2815 Chad Drive.

KEZI 9 News contacted WinCo Foods, but they have yet to confirm any plans.

However, city officials confirmed Wednesday night that WinCo has met with the city to discuss the possibility of using the space.

Also, a manager at a local business shared messages from WinCo. The company said that its current strategy is to target closed Shopkos as potential new locations.

Sources said that Boise-based development company TAIT & Associates has expressed interest in the Chad Drive building. That company also said in a news release that it has worked on 12 major projects with WinCo, as well as hundreds of smaller repairs.

WinCo is known for its low prices, leaving some nearby shoppers excited about the prospect of saving money.

"We need better shopping around here. Low priced foods," said Tracy Starr, a worker who drives through the area. "The area needs it bad."

Others are glad that the 99,509-square-foot building might not remain empty.

"The longer things stay closed, the more likely that it'll be a place people don't want loitering going on," said nearby resident Steen Jones.

Currently, there are no details on when the building might become a WinCo.
