REEDSPORT, Ore. – Witnesses say they are still shaken up about the deadly standoff that happened at Highway 101 and Winchester Avenue in Reedsport.
This all started at 5:43 p.m. when Douglas County deputies conducted a traffic stop in the area of Highway 101 and Winchester Avenue.
One individual was detained. Another person in the vehicle was armed and became hostile. This person has been identified as the suspect in the murder of Springfield garden caretaker Richard Marshall, 70.
The Crisis Negotiation Team negotiated with the suspect in the vehicle for several hours to try to de-escalate the situation before officials say shots were fired at 10:44 p.m. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
One woman told KEZI 9 News that she saw the car with the subjects inside pull into the Recreation Station gas station on Highway 101 right after the traffic stop.
She said she watched officers negotiate with the subjects for hours and she heard them screaming periodically through the night.
“He was in a white car, that’s about all I could see with his door cracked open and he was screaming at the cops,” said Susan Wallace. “I heard him scream something about a daughter, a 6 or 8-year-old daughter. I didn’t know if he wanted to see her, I couldn’t hear that well.”
The assistant manager at the Recreation Station said police told her staff to go into lockdown inside the building as they negotiated.
“We locked ourselves inside away from the glass and we kinda did our own thing,” said Delda Harrison. “They were out here for a long time. I’m sure I was in there for four hours before they let us out finally.”
Another woman told KEZI 9 News that she was in shock that an incident happened in the first place, especially in their small town.
“I was surprised when I was reading about it that this happened here,” said Lori Tibbits. “You know, I’ve never heard of anything like that happening here. You hear about this stuff in bigger cities but not in Reedsport, Oregon.”
Officials said the Douglas County Major Crimes Team will be handling the investigation further.
