EUGENE, Ore. -- Witnesses are sharing what they saw during a fatal car crash in South Eugene Monday night.

"I look in the car to see if there was anybody and everybody was just sitting still," said witness Bobbi Jo. "Kids in the back were sitting still, I could tell they were young."

Witness Jennifer Barnes also gave her reaction to the accident.

"Horror. I thought I saw five deceased boys," said Barnes. "I kept thinking, is this real? It was so calm for what had just happened. The only way I could describe it was eerily peaceful."

Friends and fellow students of the teenager killed in the crash identified him as Connor Truax, 17.

Truax was a student at South Eugene High School, according to school officials. Grief counselors are on campus today to counsel students and staff. It's not known if the four passengers in the vehicle were also SEHS students.

The crash happened just after 6 p.m. at 23rd Avenue and Patterson Street. According to police, Truax was pronounced dead shortly after police arrived on scene.

Four other passengers between the ages of 15 and 18 were taken to a local hospital with various levels of injury. A police sergeant said one of the passengers suffered life-threatening injuries.

Speed and impairment by inhalants are being investigated as contributing factors in the crash.
